One of our main partners, the World Fish Migration Foundation, together with Wetlands International recently submitted a consultation letter to the European Commission proposing a focus on dam removal as a priority topic for the EU-funded research and innovation programme Horizon Europe.
The NGOs identify the need for a systematic approach for dam removal across river basins as dam removal is the most effective method to restore freshwater ecosystems back to good ecological health. By removing these infrastructures, it will reverse the decline of freshwater biodiversity and suitable riverine habitat; thereby, significantly contributing towards achieving the objectives of the Water Framework Directive.
We know dam removal works, it’s time to do something about the state of our rivers!
