Romania’s New Barrier Removal Guideline!
We’re proud to introduce the new Guideline on How to Remove River Barriers in Romania, offering a practical overview of the barrier removal process to support free-flowing rivers.
Romania is taking important steps towards restoring its rivers. With the country’s first barrier removal project now underway, the removal of an obsolete timber dam in Europe’s largest forest wilderness national park, and several more initiatives in development, momentum is building to reconnect rivers, restore biodiversity, and improve freshwater ecosystems across the country.

To support this growing movement, we’ve produced the Guideline on Freeing Romania’s Rivers. Developed by WWF Netherlands, with contributions from Fauna & Flora and WWF Romania partners, the guide provides a practical, step-by-step framework for planning and implementing barrier removal projects, from identifying suitable sites and navigating permits to monitoring outcomes and engaging local communities.
As barrier removal continues to gain ground in Romania, we hope this guide will help practitioners, authorities, NGOs, and local communities turn restoration ambitions into successful projects.
