This webinar seeks to unite individuals, organizations, government institutions, and practitioners with a shared interest in restoring rivers and fostering free-flowing waterways across Africa and beyond. Drawing inspiration from the successful practices of Dam Removal Europe and in North America, the event will feature key experts in the field, highlighting the involvement of governmental decisions and public engagement. We aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the barrier’s situation in Africa, showing that countries as South Africa are already implementing dam removal as a restoration tool, while others, such as Ethiopia or Kenya, aspire to recover their fish populations and restore their rivers before it’s too late. Highlighting a special focus on the profound connection communities have with their rivers— sources of food, cultural values, and spiritual rituals.
During the event, we’ll emphasize the vital importance of having freer and healthier rivers, inspiring and engaging participants to actively address this critical issue. This is a space for open discussion, learning and connecting with like-minded people from around the world who share a common cause.
Participants will gain practical insights on using the Barrier Tracker app, and learning how to register barriers in rivers to get a better understanding of the global obstacle’s situation. Together, let’s unite decision-makers, broaden the network committed to Dam Removal Africa, and ignite enthusiasm for dam removal and healthy rivers.
