We are thrilled to announce another live event celebrating the removal of the Beja Watermill, a long-abandoned wooden sluice that has obstructed migratory paths in the Alūksne River, Northeastern Latvia, for over a century. Join us as Magda Jentgena from Pasaules Dabas Fonds | WWF Latvia tell us more about this restoration project, aimed at restoring migratory routes, improving water quality and reducing the risks posed by this outdated barrier.
We invite you to join us for a special live broadcast on the Dam Removal Europe YouTube channel to learn more about this river restoration effort and its impact on local biodiversity.

The wooden sluice was considered ‘ownerless’ and in a critical state of emergency, posing potential flood risks to the downstream areas.
The choice was to either repair it or remove it to eliminate the threat to public safety. Due to a lack of funds for maintenance, the municipality opted for removal.
By removing the obsolete sluice, the Pasaules Dabas Fonds | WWF Latvia successfully restored 20 km of river, reconnecting Lake Alūksne with the Pededze River for the first time since the 19th century.
