Celebrating a Growing Movement for Free-Flowing Rivers
The first edition of Dam Removal Day united 30 European countries through 45 events, bringing together hundreds of organisations, communities, and river enthusiasts to highlight the importance of removing obsolete barriers and reconnecting rivers.
From local field trips and seminars to film screenings and real dam removal actions, Dam Removal Day 2025 showcased the diversity and momentum of the growing free-flowing river movement. These events not only raised awareness about the ecological importance of river connectivity but also celebrated the collective effort driving Europe’s transition toward healthier, more resilient ecosystems.
The Dam Removal Day 2025 Report captures all the highlights, inspiring stories, key statistics, and stunning photos from across the continent, illustrating how collaboration and commitment are transforming Europe’s rivers.
A big thank you to all partners and organisations who made this first edition a success. Dam Removal Day was organised under the framework of the project “Scaling Up Dam Removal: Implementation Plan for Southeastern Europe,” coordinated by WWF Netherlands and supported by the European Open Rivers Programme.
